PRESS RELEASE: Dublin Fringe Festival marks a landmark year and looks forward to 2017
Following a sensational year of artistic successes and box office bests, Dublin Fringe Festival is looking forward to an exciting 2017. The country’s leading multi-disciplinary arts festival celebrated a record-breaking edition this year with over 35,000 attendees to hundreds of performances in September 2016, welcoming over 6,000 more audience members than the year before. For sixteen days and nights, the festival hub and spectacular Spiegeltent at Merrion Square drew crowds over 11,000 including for the hottest ticket in town, RIOT.
Surpassing audience numbers for the last ten years, Fringe recorded its highest ticket revenue since 2006 with 73% capacity achieved across the festival. 645 artists including renowned international performers and Ireland’s brightest makers enlivened the capital with a kaleidoscope of theatre, dance, music, comedy, circus, cabaret and live art.
As ever, Dublin Fringe Festival fuels innovation. FRINGE LAB, a year-round artist support and training facility in the heart of Temple Bar, welcomed over 200 artists through its doors for 7,000 hours of development work in the past twelve months. FRINGE LAB provides space, training, workshops and professional development to independent artists for free or at super low cost. In 2017, Fringe will mark the fifth birthday of FRINGE LAB, an initiative to nurture Irish artists and support those representing the future of Irish arts and culture. Events will take place throughout 2017 to celebrate this important landmark including FRINGE FUSE – themed nights showcasing Ireland’s emerging talent, specially curated by Fringe ambassadors. Planning is well underway for the next year of Fringe, with festival dates confirmed as 9 – 24 September 2017. As ever, Dublin will be transformed as incredible creative talent takes centre stage for sixteen days and nights. Fringe 2017 will provide audiences with meaningful, exciting and unforgettable cultural experiences. Applications for the 23rd edition of the world’s only fully curated Fringe festival open in January 2017. Further programme announcements will be made early next year.
