Keeping Her Lit: FRINGE LAB 50

27 October 2020

The work to keep her lit continues! Since September, FRINGE LAB has paired 50 artists with key collaborators including Soho Theatre, THISISPOPBABY, Gilded Balloon, Inua Ellams, FIshamble, The White Pube and more.

An extension of our Dublin Fringe Festival: Pilot Light Edition programme, FRINGE LAB is championing 50 artists who introduced themselves to us through our festival application process. We’re delighted to be supporting them as they continue crafting and coalescing their big ideas.

The artists that make up the FRINGE LAB 50 are radical, bold makers working across disciplines to make work that speaks to the now. We have coordinated an artist support series tailored to these exceptional artists, including one-one mentorships, artist residencies and workshops from September 2020 through Spring 2021.

The 50 artists are:

This work is an investment in talent, a platform for big ideas and a promise to the return of live work in future.

Mentorships
National and international leaders in their fields are providing paid one-on-one mentorship opportunities, working directly with artists to develop their projects and practise. We are thrilled to be working with Soho Theatre on dramaturgical interventions, THISISPOPBABY on performance craft, Gilded Balloon on creating radical comedy, Lynnette Moran on live art practise, Claire O’Reilly and Brokentalkers on making contemporary theatre, Kate Lennon on staging site-specific work and Fishamble, The New Play Company on a new partnership ‘Big Ambitions’.

We will be sharing more details on our mentors and the participants over the coming weeks.

Utopia or Bust
As part of our Dublin Fringe Festival: Pilot Edition programme, Dublin Fringe Festival and Centre Culturel Irlandais commissioned three sets of trailblazing, peerless Irish artists, gender.RIP, Glitter HOLE and We Are Griot, to write and share their manifestos for the new era they want to usher in. As some of the artists to whom we want to entrust our future, FRINGE LAB is further supporting their visions with a week’s residency and guidance from a mentor of their choice. While Glitter HOLE have opted to expand their team of collaborators on their residency week, WeAreGriot will be mentored by playwright and poet Inua Ellams and Gender.RIP by critics The White Pube.

Artist at Work
As part of our Dublin Fringe Festival: Pilot Edition programme in September we facilitated six paid idea development residencies across the island. We supported seven bold makers to keep the ever-industrious buzz of artists at work going throughout the summer. These shone a light on artistic process and the often-invisible work done by artists. This scheme was in partnership with Axis Ballymun (Dublin), the Lyric Theatre (Belfast), Town Hall Theatre (Galway), Dance Limerick (Limerick) and Corcadorca & Theatre Development Centre (Cork).

Details and sign-up for the open access FRINGE LAB winter programme of open access workshops will be shared soon. Please email fringelab@fringefest.com if you would like to sign up to our FRINGE LAB mailing list.
